RCOG Basic Practical Skills Course

Overview 

This one-day course introduces trainees to core surgical techniques and clinical skills in a safe and structured workshop environment. The course is directly aligned to the RCOG Training Portfolio and OSATS and focuses on the development of hands-on skills including: 

  • Instrument handling  

  • Knot tying and suturing 

  • Hysteroscopy 

  • Perineal repair 

  • Coil insertion and cervical smear 

  • Laparoscopy 

  • Opening and closing abdomen 

  • Uterine evacuation 

  • Minor procedures: cervical smear, insertion of coil and word catheter 

Intended for ST1 and 2, this course covers the skills required for progression to ST3. 

Attendees will be supported by a senior faculty of experienced UK-based consultants. 

Prior to the course, approximately 2-3 hours of eLearning including videos and assessments will help you get the most from the practical sessions. 

Please note that certain procedures in this course will require attendees to work on animal tissue - pork belly and ox tongue. If this a concern, please contact the RCOG team before booking.

Learning objectives and who should attend 

By attending this course, you will:  

  • Learn and practise the basic operative skills required for Tier 1 and progression to Tier 2 working 

  • Sign off elements in the RCOG Training Portfolio Logbook and OSATS 

  • Complete the mandatory requirements for ST3 


Who should attend 

  • ST1 and 2 

Foundation trainees and other grades are welcome to attend but trainees who need the course for timely progression to ST3 will be prioritised.
